NEW YORK (AP) —The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved the first generic version of a popular erectile dysfunction drug, the drug's active ingredient, Pfizer Inc.'s Viagra.
The drug, a generic version of Viagra, treats erectile dysfunction in men. It's been available generically since 1998.
The drug's maker says its approval is a significant victory for the pharmaceutical industry and will be used in future studies.
The approval follows a slew of drug approvals in the past three months, including FDA approval of a rival drug, Cialis.
In January, the FDA approved a rival drug, Levitra.
The drug's active ingredient,, is called vardenafil, which is sold under the brand name Staxyn. It's also available generically, including as Pfizer's.
Viagra, Lilly's erectile dysfunction drug, has been in short supply in the United States.
Lilly has said it expects Viagra to become available in the United States in March. It said it is in discussions with regulators with hopes of reaching an agreement that could be submitted to the Food and Drug Administration on May 1.
The FDA has approved generic versions of Viagra and Levitra.
In May, Pfizer Inc., which makes the erectile dysfunction drug, filed for a request to market a generic version.
Pfizer said Tuesday it had rejected Viagra's application in the United States because it had not had enough sales to keep up with demand.
Pfizer's patent on Viagra expires in June. It is unclear how many generic drugs the drug maker must demonstrate to meet that price tag.

A man and a woman from the US, who are also seeking Viagra to help them combat the effects of an erectile dysfunction medication called “Viagra”, have been ordered to pay an undisclosed $2.5 million (€1.2 million) to the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
The women’s health agency is notifying them that it is investigating their case. The women, who are aged 50 and older, have been charged with being under the influence of drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction. The female participants and their healthcare providers said that “Viagra” is the first prescription drug to be prescribed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The women’s health agency said that “Viagra” is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of sexual dysfunction. It is not intended to cure the condition. The women have already been diagnosed with ED. The women are not being treated for the condition. The women are taking the medication for the first time and no longer have ED symptoms.
The women’s health agency said that “Viagra” is not prescribed for the treatment of ED because of its side effect profile. The FDA has not approved a generic version of Viagra or other ED drugs for men, and the FDA is not required to add a new medication to the list of approved drugs for the treatment of ED.
The women’s health agency said that “Viagra” is not prescribed for the treatment of ED because the medication has been shown to cause side effects in patients taking certain drugs. The women are not taking any other medications or other treatment for ED. The women have been prescribed Viagra to treat the symptoms of ED.
The women’s health agency said that “Viagra” is not a prescription drug. The women have been taking the medication for more than six months. The women were diagnosed with ED when they suffered a severe allergic reaction to Viagra or other medications taken by themselves, or an individual who has taken Viagra or other medications prescribed by a doctor. The women have had a physical, and it was not clear that the women were taking any other medication.
The women’s health agency said that “Viagra” is not a “medical treatment”. The women have been treated for the condition since it was first approved by the FDA in 1990. The women have been given the medication for more than six months and no longer have ED symptoms.
The cheapest erectile dysfunction (ED) pills are generic Viagra, called.
The term "generic" refers to the active ingredient of a medicine or drug rather than to the advertised brand name under which the medicine is sold. It is a term referring to any drug marketed under its chemical name without advertising.
Pfizer made the originaltablet that is often referred to as the “blue pill”.The patent expired in 2013 which then allowed other pharmaceutical manufactures to make a generic version under the name of the active ingredient called Sildenafil. They are exactly the same medically and perform in the same way with the same side-effects.
As with most branded products, Viagra is sold at a higher price, therefore the generic tablets sold asare much cheaper.
Medically there is no difference between a generic medicine and the branded medicine, as they both have the same active ingredients to make them perform in the same way. They only differ in the “bulking” agents used to fill the tablet as the amount of active ingredient required, in this case Sildenafil, is very small. This makes the tablets bigger and easier to handle.
The main difference between generic andbranded named prescription medicines is cost with generics being much cheaper
Every pharmacy can choose what price they sell at, as there are no fixed prices. It will depend on what price the pharmacy can buy the drug from the wholesaler and the cost of their own overheads. They can they decide what mark-up they require and some pharmacies choose to sell some products at higher prices.
At Webmed pharmacy we aim to keep our prices as low as possible, without compromising the quality of service, as we arethe only online pharmacy to offercourier guaranteed next working day as standard
We offer a very fast, confidential and discreet service that isby the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
A large proportion of our sales are made up of returning customers as they have been delighted with our service.
When you choose to buy any prescription medication online, you must first of check that the pharmacy is with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
All pharmacies using a UK General Medical Council, to prescribe their medicines will also be registered with the UK government Agency the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Those online pharmacies who are not registered with the CQC either use pharmacist prescribers or foreign doctors.
You will then know and have the confidence that all the brands being offered are genuine and will work in the same way. All the pharmaceutical companies are inspected by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to ensure they manufacturer the drugs to the same quality standard. This means that the key ingredient that is referred to as the “active” ingredient is exactly the same in all brands.
The other inactive ingredients that make up the bulk of the tablet are called “excipients” and can vary.
For those people who are allergic to or have an intolerance to lactose, then the is ideal for you as it is lactose free. You can check the additional excipients on the patient information leaflet supplied with your tablets.
Although medically all the generic tablets are identical, they may look different as they can vary in colour, shape and size due to the varying excipients.
The patent for, owned by Pfizer, expired in July 2013, which then allowed other pharmaceutical companies to produce generic. There are a number of companies now manufacturing which include Accord, Ajanta, Dr Reddy’s, Mylan, Teva, Torrent and Zentiva. Even Pfizer make a that they sell cheaper than Viagra although generally more expensive than the equivalent generic brands.
